It seems that the camera "forces" you to shoot vertically, although it is not a good tension for places with a horizontal dominant (and one eye next to the other, not on top). But the vertical format, according to the marketing, benefits sharing photographs on phones... since these have a vertical format, which means a contradiction with what can be valued in an analog world. One problem that is obvious is that half 35mm is not a good idea when you have cheap digital cameras with much better resolution. Before there were even smaller formats in instant cameras, but that is not an argument for not making a good small 35mm camera, minimum format. It seems much more like a marketing exercise (generation of surplus value) taking advantage of what for many is just a fashion without philosophical and aesthetic positions on analogue, than a product for photographers with critical capacity. One thing that may eventually be good is that with a larger market, the price of a roll of film may drop, ridiculously high these days, as the scale of production increases.....or manufacturers may discover that at be a fashion for the majority, they can continue to increase prices and production, ensuring greater profits at the expense of the fetishism of the commodity.

I became a pro using the original Olympus Pen-S! Front page of Africa's largest newspaper! Front page, across 5 colums! 1/2 frame fits photo paper better than 35 F.F. I made 8x12" and as big as 16x20"! Sure grain, it was Tri-X old and Rodinal. Many testers don't like the camera! Almost nobody liked the 1st Leica! I think though regarding price, a good Nikon, Canon, Pentax SLR used, with a few lenses, a better way! Great Video.

I think part of the reason black and white images are so captivating is because they're a different perspective to what we see. The lack of distracting colours also helps us see little details and shapes we might not have noticed otherwise. Very curious about how someone with monochromatic colour blindness views b&w and colour photography.

I wish Pentax/Ricoh much success with the Pentax 17. For me there are two deal breakers, 1) Half frame, and 2) Zone focusing. I guess a third deal breaker would be the price. You can buy a lot of incredible "like new" well built used film cameras for the price. For example: You can buy a mint Nikon F5 for under $400.

Great video love the images..Own a Oly Pen F but might consider this as well. Come shoot North Dakota it's Legendary..

great images, but, as it's 1/2 frame, that means a 36 exp. roll turns into roughly 72 exp. so you have a long wait for images!, also interesting that it mimics a panorama format, aka 6x12 cm or 4x10" in the portrait orientation, so wonder why Pentax didn't include a framing finder, like that on a Linhof technika, or the Leica M's to frame correctly, accounting for parallax to, which closeup may be a potential problem, for a separate viewfinder.

i would have thought it would make more sense since there are 36shots in a roll of film "ignoring the 24 rolls" that they would have gone with pentax 18 since 18x2 =36 where as 17x2 =34, if they are referring to the 35mm camera they should have gone with 17.5 ;) LOL.. ahhh well, hope you have fun with it :)

You are really good at making videos! What I like about the Pentax 17: The look and form factor. The fact that it's half frame. What I want it to have: Fully manual controls and a mirror box for through the viewfinder focus. Actual F stops. A faster lens. I really just want a half frame modern K1000.

I didn't think about the economy of film on a half frame until just now near the end of this video. Great point. I also get that portrait is kind of the new normal but I'll always be on my landscape shit.

I think this camera is a big disappointment for the film users. I think still much better idea to buy a used slr. I bought an Olympus OM4Ti - looks like a new and a much better camera. I think a used K1000 Pentax is a much better deal.
